Inspired by the natural assets of Hawar Island with an active approach to regenerate the existing hotel into an eco-responsive destination.
Three guiding principles underpin the design:
- Protection – protect the pristine natural environment and cultural heritage of Hawar Island.
- Restoration – restore and enhance the natural and cultural heritage to increase biocultural diversity.
- Experience – provide an immersive visitor experience that celebrates the unique Spirit of Place of Hawar Island.
Guests to Hawar Island arrive by boat or seaplane and dock at the existing marina. A combined guest arrivals pavilion and speciality restaurant structure floats above the gently lapping sea to celebrate this memorable arrivals’ experience and welcome them to the island of Hawar. Here guests are provided with a refreshing drink and familiarised with the resort whilst drinking in the beautiful panoramic view out to sea and back to the hotel’s beaches and the adventure that awaits them.
The main hub of the resort is located in the existing hotel which is positioned on a sandy bluff looking out to sea and the distant islands on the horizon. The building will be reinvigorated and reimagined using contemporary interpretations of traditional Bahraini architectural details bringing an authenticity and simplicity to the structure. Two renovated guest room wings splay outwards from the centralised core. Each guest room will enjoy spectacular sea views from their outdoor terraces and balconies overlooking a beautifully manicured pool deck connecting guests with the sea and coastline beyond.
The all-day dining restaurant on the lowest level spills out on to the landscaped pool terrace allowing for generous, animated al-fresco dining. A dramatic linear pool aligned on a central axis with the hotel reinforces the connection to the sea beyond. A more organic family focused pool with ample shading is located at the end of the southern guest wing. A pool grill pavilion serves both areas and provides screening between these two spaces.
Between the hotel and the marina’s breakwater are located the more animated elements of the resort – the function building and the club lounge. Both slightly elevated overlooking the beach flanking the breakwater with great connections to the Hawar Adventure and Water Park behind. This bay will also be the focus for non-motorised water sports activities.
